The Nigerian women's basketball team made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by reaching the quarterfinals for the first time. This marked a significant milestone as they became the first African team, male or female, to advance this far in Olympic basketball history. Their journey included a notable victory against Canada, which secured their spot in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Nigeria faced the United States, a team renowned for its dominance in women's basketball. Despite a valiant effort, Nigeria fell short, losing 88-74. Promise Amukamara led the Nigerian team with 19 points, while Ezinne Kalu added 16 points. Although Nigeria outscored the U.S. in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
This performance highlights the rapid growth and development of basketball in Nigeria, with Coach Cheryl Reeve of the U.S. acknowledging Nigeria's significant progress over recent years.
