John Dumelo Proposes Irrigation Solution to Boost Ghana's Agriculture
John Dumelo, who is making waves in Ghana as he campaigns for the Ayawaso West seat in the upcoming election, has taken to social media to address agricultural deficiencies in the country. In a recent post, Dumelo advised the Ministry of Agriculture to scrap the "Planting for Food and Jobs" program, calling it a conduit for corruption and underperformance. Instead, he urged heavy investment in irrigation for dry season farming. He highlighted the current high prices of peppers, tomatoes, and onions, attributing them to insufficient production during the dry season. Dumelo pointed out that neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have effectively invested in irrigation, capitalizing on this gap to supply these crops to Ghana. With the rainy season underway, Dumelo noted that prices would drop around July and August due to simultaneous harvesting, not government intervention. He emphasized the need for irrigation to ensure year-round price stability and reduce dependence on imported produce. Dumelo's call for change advocates for empowering Ghanaian farmers to fully utilize their capacity through improved irrigation systems.
