Senegal made history yesterday as 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye took the oath of office, becoming not only the youngest president in the nation's history but also the youngest on the entire African continent.
In a stunning electoral victory, Faye secured over 54% of the votes, defeating his main rival and the ruling party candidate, Amadou Ba, despite having just ten days to campaign. A former tax inspector with no prior elected office, Faye's ascent to the presidency marks a remarkable turn in Senegal's political landscape.
During his swearing-in ceremony in Diamniado, near Dakar, Faye pledged to uphold the integrity of Senegal's territory and national independence. He vowed to spearhead systemic change, promising a future of hope, peace, and strengthened democracy under his leadership.
The historic event drew distinguished guests from across the African continent, including Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo among others. Representatives from the African Union Commission and military juntas of neighboring nations also graced the occasion.
