Nigeria Seeks South Africa’s Endorsement for G20 and BRICS Membership

In a strategic move to amplify its global influence, Nigeria has officially requested South Africa’s support to join the prestigious G20 and BRICS economic blocs. This development emerged during bi-annual talks held in Cape Town, where Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Roland Lamola, discussed strengthening their nations' partnership.

The request coincided with South Africa assuming the rotating G20 presidency, with Lamola expressing optimism about Nigeria’s potential contributions. "Our people expect South Africa and Nigeria… to work together more closely," he remarked, emphasizing the shared aspirations of both nations for improved living conditions and economic prospects.

Nigeria’s push comes amid President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious reforms to diversify its oil-dependent economy and foster sustainable growth. As Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria's inclusion in BRICS—a group already representing 37% of global GDP—would further elevate its status on the international stage. With BRICS welcoming other African nations like Egypt and Ethiopia, Nigeria’s potential membership could reshape the bloc’s economic dynamics.

The joint communique on Nigeria’s membership is set to be presented to Presidents Tinubu and Cyril Ramaphosa, marking a significant step towards fostering unity between Africa’s two economic powerhouses.
